Respite care
Respite is care for your loved one so that you can stop for a while. A wedding, a trip home, a medical appointment of your own, or simply a full night of sleep. It can be a few hours a week on a regular schedule, or a block of days.
If your family member is on the Virginia Medicaid CCC Plus Waiver, a set number of respite hours is often part of what they are already entitled to, and many families never use them because nobody explained they existed.
Overnight and live-in care
Some people are fine during the day and unsafe after dark. Wandering, falls on the way to the bathroom, confusion at night, or a spouse who cannot lift them anymore. We staff overnight shifts and live-in arrangements where a caregiver stays in the home.
24-hour care
For advanced dementia, end-of-life care, or after a serious hospital discharge, we schedule caregivers in shifts so someone is awake and attentive at all times. A nurse oversees the plan, and we keep the same small team of caregivers wherever possible, since that is easier for someone with memory loss.
Ask for help before you run out of room
Many family caregivers wait too long before asking for help. A few hours of respite care each week can make caregiving sustainable for the long run.
