Paying for care
Most families assume home care is out of reach before they find out what is covered. Here is how it works in Virginia.
Virginia Medicaid
Millennium is an enrolled Virginia Medicaid provider. For members approved through the CCC Plus Waiver, personal care and respite hours are generally covered, with no bill to the family.
Private pay
Clear hourly rates, weekly invoicing and no long-term contract. Useful while a Medicaid application is pending, or for families who want more hours than a plan approves.
Long-term care insurance
We provide the visit logs, care plans and invoices insurers require, and can bill or submit documentation depending on the policy.
Virginia Medicaid and the CCC Plus Waiver
Most home care in Virginia is paid for through Medicaid's home and community based waiver, known as the CCC Plus Waiver, which sits inside the state's Cardinal Care programme. It exists for people who would otherwise need to be in a nursing home: older adults, people with physical disabilities, and people who are chronically ill or severely impaired.
How someone gets approved
- Medicaid eligibility. Apply through CommonHelp, the Cover Virginia call centre on 1-833-522-5582, or your local Department of Social Services.
- Screening. Request a screening through your local Department of Social Services. A community based team, usually a social worker and a nurse, assesses what help the person needs. If your relative is in hospital, ask the discharge planner.
- Waiver approval and enrolment. Once approved, the person chooses a health plan and then chooses their provider. That is where you can choose Millennium.
- Care begins. The approved hours are set out in a plan of care and we schedule caregivers against it.
You have the right to choose your provider. If a hospital, a health plan or a case manager hands you one agency's name, you are not obliged to use them. You may ask for Millennium Home Health Care by name.
What if there is no Medicaid?
Your family member may qualify for Medicaid and simply never applied, or they may be over the income and asset limits. We will help you find out which, at no cost. If they do not qualify, private pay hours can be arranged in whatever amount fits the budget. Even four hours a week changes how a household runs.
Veterans
Some veterans and surviving spouses are eligible for VA benefits that help pay for care at home. If there is a veteran in the family, mention it when you call and we will point you to the right place to ask.
Coverage rules can change
Coverage rules, rates and programme names change, and the final decision always rests with Medicaid and the health plan. Nothing on this page is a guarantee of benefits. We will tell you what we know, and say so plainly when we do not know.
Not sure where to start? Just call us.
Tell us what is going on at home. We will explain your options in plain language, in English or Amharic, and tell you whether we are the right fit. The consultation is free and there is no obligation.
