Questions & answers

The things families ask us most often, answered without sales talk.

How much does home care cost?

It depends on who pays. If your loved one is approved for Virginia Medicaid’s CCC Plus Waiver, personal care and respite hours are generally covered and there is typically no bill to the family. For private pay, we quote a clear hourly rate before anything starts, and the total depends on how many hours a week you need. Call us and we will give you an exact number for your situation.

How quickly can care start?

For private pay, often within a few days, sometimes the next day for urgent hospital discharges. For Medicaid-funded care, the timeline depends on where you are in the screening and approval process. If you are just starting, call now. The paperwork takes most of the time.

Is there a minimum number of hours?

We work with families on small schedules and large ones. Tell us what you need and we will tell you whether we can staff it well. A caregiver rushed in and out in an hour does not help much, so we will talk through a schedule that works for your family.

Can we choose the caregiver?

You have real say in who comes to your home. We match on language, culture, gender preference, skills and personality, and we introduce the caregiver before care begins. If the match is not working, tell us and we will change it.

Do your caregivers speak Amharic?

Many do. We also have caregivers who speak Tigrinya, Spanish and English. We cannot promise a specific language for every shift in every town, and we plan for language matching from the start of every case.

Are your caregivers background-checked and insured?

Yes. Every caregiver goes through a criminal background check, reference checks and verification of work eligibility before being assigned to a family. Millennium is licensed by the Virginia Department of Health as a home care organization, and is insured and bonded.

What is the difference between home care and home health?

Home care, personal care and companion care, is non-medical help with daily life: bathing, dressing, meals, errands. It does not require a doctor’s order. Home health is clinical care such as nursing and therapy, ordered by a physician and delivered under a plan of care. Many families use both at once.

Can a family member be paid to provide the care?

Often, yes, through Virginia Medicaid’s consumer-directed option. Spouses and legal guardians are generally excluded. Adult children and other relatives frequently qualify. See our page on getting paid to care for family.

Do you serve people who are not Ethiopian?

Yes. We serve every family in Northern Virginia and always have. Our roots are in the Ethiopian and Eritrean community, and every family gets the same standard of care.

What if we are not happy with something?

Tell us early. Call the office and ask for a coordinator. Most problems, including timing, tasks or personality fit, are fixable in a day once we know about them.

Do you provide care in assisted living or a nursing home?

In some cases we can provide additional one-to-one support in a facility. Call and describe the situation and we will tell you what is possible.
