How to Become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in Virginia

August 19, 2026 · Millennium Care Team

What a CNA does

Certified nursing assistants provide hands-on personal care under the supervision of a nurse: bathing, dressing, mobility support, vital signs and daily monitoring. In home care, a CNA often works with clients who have more involved needs than a personal care aide typically handles.

Steps to become a CNA in Virginia

  1. Complete a state-approved nurse aide training program. Programs are offered through community colleges, vocational schools and some employers.
  2. Complete required clinical hours. Training combines classroom instruction with supervised hands-on practice.
  3. Pass the Virginia Nurse Aide Certification exam. The exam includes a written or oral portion and a skills demonstration.
  4. Register with the Virginia Board of Nursing. Once you pass, your name is added to the Virginia Nurse Aide Registry.

How long it takes

Most programs run a few weeks to a few months, depending on the schedule and whether it is full time or part time.

What comes after certification

CNAs can work in home care, assisted living, nursing homes and hospitals. In home care, CNAs often have more schedule flexibility and one-to-one time with clients than facility work allows.

Working as a CNA at Millennium

Millennium hires CNAs across Northern Virginia for full time, part time and weekend shifts, with pay that reflects experience and a clear path from personal care aide to CNA for staff who are close to certification.
