If you are looking at caregiver jobs in Northern Virginia you have seen three sets of letters and probably assumed they are ranked. They are not exactly. They are different doors into the same building, and one of them is open right now.

PCA, personal care aide

A PCA helps with daily living: bathing, dressing, meals, medication reminders, light housekeeping, getting to appointments. No state certification exam. Training is provided by the agency, and Medicaid personal care work in Virginia runs through this route.

This is the fastest way in. If you have looked after a family member, you have done this work already.

HHA, home health aide

Similar hands-on work, with a formal training requirement and a competency evaluation behind it. HHAs often work alongside skilled nursing and therapy, and the paperwork expectations are heavier. Ask the training provider for the current hour requirement, it is set federally and it moves.

CNA, certified nursing assistant

A state certification. You complete an approved program, pass the exam, and appear on the Virginia nurse aide registry. CNAs can work in nursing facilities and hospitals as well as homes, which is why the certificate travels furthest and pays best.

Which should you go for

If you need work soon, start as a PCA. Agencies train you, you begin earning, and the hours count as real experience.

If you already know you want a career in health care, go for the CNA. The program costs time and money up front and returns it in pay and options. Some people work as a PCA while studying for it, which is the route we would point most people toward.

The HHA sits between the two and is worth it if you want the clinical side without the full CNA commitment.

What we look for

Reliability first. The families we serve need the same person on the same days, and the caregivers who last here are the ones who show up.

After that: patience, honest communication, and a driving license helps. Speaking Amharic, Tigrinya or Spanish matters a great deal to us, because it is why many families choose us in the first place.

About pay

We look at what other Northern Virginia agencies pay for the same work and set our rates against that range. We would rather talk about it with you directly than post a number that turns out not to match your hours, your certification or your schedule.

Ask us on the call. We will give you a straight answer.
